Salvadoran residents can travel to European countries visa-free till the end of 2022. This visa exemption comes due to the Schengen agreement between the Salvadorans and the EU. However, once the European Commission initiates the travel authorization system in 2022, all the Salvadorans will also require to apply for a visa waiver before coming to Europe. The ETIAS will enable visa holders to access the 22 members and the four non-member states with the ETIAS. It will allow Salvadorans to spend short trips to travel, business, medical treatment, or transition to another state. The visitors can freely move within the Schengen area as long as 90-days within a 6-month period. The ETIAS will have a 3-year validity from its date of issuance. Salvadorans can use it as a multiple entry visa, meaning they can enter many times without applying for an ETIAS for every trip to the Schengen region.

The European travel authorization system or the ETIAS will become applicable to visitors of 60 countries, including Salvadorans. The main aim of this USA based authorization system is to secure the Schengen borders along with strengthening the ties among the 22 Schengen states

The visa application has an online process that is quick and straightforward and reduces the hassle for the Salvadoran residents of manually applying for the ETIAS by visiting the embassy. All the applicants can access the online form through the internet and place the application at their convenience on any smartphone, laptop, or tablet device.

The Salvadorans can enter Europe multiple times with the ETIAS visa, travel, and stay in the Schengen area for 90-days every six months. The approved travel authorization will allow all visitors the right to enter the following territories.

What ETIAS requisites do Salvadorans have to fulfill to travel to Europe?

Currently, the Salvadorans can travel to the Schengen area without any visa. However, after the launch of ETIAS next year, they will have to apply for travel authorization to enter Europe. The ETIAS visa can be placed through an online application that requires the Salvadorans to have the following documents to enter all information accurately. Failure to fulfill the requirements of these documents will result in denial of the ETIAS.

  • A valid Salvadoran passport is a must. However, the document must have at least an extra 3-month validity remaining, past the scheduled trip.
  • All applicants must provide a valid email ID. The Salvadoran applicants must confirm if the spelling and address are correct before submission. The applicants will get notifications of the processing updates and the ETIAS approval at the given address.
  • The Salvadoran residents must use either a debit or a credit to pay the ETIAS processing fee. However, individuals who are above 70 years and minors under 18 years are exempt from paying the service charge.

The documents mentioned above are mandatory for all applicants to enter all the information in the online form coherently. Dual nationality holders should enter the details of the passport that they will use for traveling to Europe. The Salvadorans should keep in mind that the ETIAS does not permit other travels as it is not a visa but a travel authorization. The EC designed the ETIAS to connect with every applicant's original passport digitally, so it is non-transferable to another passport. If the ETIAS expires before the visitor's passport expiry, all Salvadoran visa holders must apply for a new visa waiver to continue enjoying the ETIAS benefits.

The ETIAS Application process from Salvadorans

Salvadoran residents have to apply for the ETIAS through an online application. The process is hassle-free, and visitors do not need to visit any consulate to apply for a visa, as in the case of the standard European visit visas. The Salvadoran citizens must note that the ETIAS is not a visa; instead, it is a travel authorization that gives European travelers access to the Schengen region. The applicants can easily apply for the ETIAS with an internet connection on laptops, smartphones, or tablets.

The ETIAS application requires the following information from the Salvadorans applicants;

  • The Full name of the Salvadoran visitor.
  • The Nationality, or how many nationalities does the applicant have?
  • Birthdate and country of birth.
  • Current phone number.
  • The Salvadoran applicants should mention a valid email address without spelling errors. The ETIAS application will send all the ETIAS updates and the authorized visa waiver on the ID provided.
  • The applicants must have a valid passport with a minimum 3-month validity remaining from the period of intended stay.

Once the applicants have answered all the necessary questions with relevant details, they must re-check before hitting the submit button. Each Salvadoran resident will pass through an automatic screening process. The computer will scan each application through several safety databases for any issues or red flags. This process aims to identify any threats before the applicant is allowed to enter the zone. Once the Salvadorans enter the region, they can move freely anywhere in the Schengen area. However, the online form seeks approval of the preferred first country of entry once the visitors arrive in Europe.

The Salvadoran visitors will also have to answer a few health and security-related questions such as,

  • Information regarding past criminal records.
  • Employment history and current work details.
  • Applicants must report any participation in human trafficking.
  • The Salvadoran visitors must mention travel intent to Europe, travel history, including any past Europe travel, visit to security compromised countries, and any future travel plans.
  • Travel history of Europe.

Besides the ETIAS, applicants must ensure that the entered information matches the details on their documents, spelling mistakes, or any other such errors that may raise red flags. The email address should also be verified again as the updates of the process, the authorized ETIAS, and the digital copy of the visa waiver all will be sent to the provided email ID.

The European Commission developed the travel authorization system in 2016, which will launch at the end of 2022. The ETIAS aims to identify potential risks by pre-screening all visitors coming to the Schengen region. It will also improve border security and reinforce the Schengen territory. The ETIAS visa waiver will benefit the member state residents as well as the Salvadoran visitors.

After completion of the application, all applicants have to pay a nominal service charge of 7-euros. The processing is quick, and most applications are processed within one business day. The applicants will receive their approved visas through their mail. However, in case of denial, the applicant will receive a mail mentioning the reason for rejection. The Salvadorans can appeal the decision in this situation or opt to apply for manual processing at the embassy.

The approved travel authorization connects automatically to the applicant's passport, so it is impossible to transfer the waiver to another passport in case of loss, theft, or expiry. So, the dual nationality Salvadorans must select one of the two passports to apply for the visa and remember to carry it along with their travel. Also, as the ETIAS is non-transferable, the Salvadoran visa holders will have to apply for another ETIAS after getting a new passport number once the linked passport expires. This is important if the visitors want to keep enjoying the visa waiver benefits for a further three years.

The ETIAS application will pass multiple screening through various European security databases, including the VIS, Europol, Interpol, and EURODAC. The officials conduct such security checks to identify potential risks and applicant's background details like criminal records, theft, fraudulent activities, drug abuse, illegal immigration, terrorist activities, and human trafficking crimes.

The travel authorization will allow Salvadorans to spend short trips to travel, business, medical treatment, or transition to another state. The Salvadoran residents must place the application at least 72 hours prior to their departure to enable visa sufficient processing time.

The visitors will have to present their authorized ETIAS on arrival at border checkpoints. The officials hold the absolute right to decide whom to allow. They will verify each individual's documents and details and grant entrance to individuals based on the decision. However, if they have any doubts about an individual will not be allowed to enter.

How many days can Salvadorans spend in Europe with the ETIAS?

The ETIAS allows the visa holders to stay and travel within the Schengen region for a maximum of 90-days in 6-month duration. The travel authorization enables the Salvadoran visitors’ multiple entries into Europe until its three-year validity. However, the ETIAS policy expects all visitors traveling with an ETIAS visa to exit the region once the 90-day stay limit expires. They can travel back, fly to any other non-European country, and not travel within the Schengen region. They can enter again after spending a minimum of 3 months outside the area. The Salvadorans who do not comply with this regulation may face harsh consequences such as hefty penalties, deportation, and even the ETIAS VISA WAIVER's cancellation. The Salvadorans who wish to spend more time in the Schengen area can do so with an appropriate European visa. The EU visa, unlike the ETIAS, must be manually at the consulate of the country they want to visit, and it will grant them a longer-term stay in the Schengen region.

Can Salvadorans work in Europe on ETIAS visa waiver?

Since the ETIAS is not a permit for travel, it cannot allow the Salvadorans to visit or stay in Europe for employment intent. Although the visitors can attend short business activities during their short stay in the country, if they wish to work and stay longer, they must have a European visa for this purpose. The Salvadorans who want employment in Europe must visit the embassy of the country where they wish to live. The agents will guide you regarding the process and requisites of the work visa. Also, every Schengen member state has different working laws, so the visitor must become well equipped with all the information and then apply for the visa. Once they apply for a European visa, they are free to seek employment opportunities.

Can the Salvadorans study in Europe on an ETIAS visa?

The ETIAS does not allow any Salvadoran visitors to pursue an education in Europe. Although, the visitors who want to attend short seminars or courses during the three-month stay in the Schengen area can do so. However, any student who wants to enroll in any institution for long-term education must apply for a student visa at the consulate of the destination country.
