USA has already deployed a travel authorization system for the people entering their motherland with US ESTA's name for the safety of their citizens. The EU Commission has also decided to improve the safety and security of the citizens and travelers from all around the globe to the Schengen states.

The ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) will be imposed from the last quarter of 2022 to enhance travelers' and citizens' security and safety, just like US ESTA and various other travel authorization systems in developed countries. American citizens who wish to travel in the Schengen states and four other European countries will need to get authorization from the ETIAS for their visa waiver. This waiver will allow them to stay and travel to or from the Schengen states for a short period.

US citizens are no obliged to obtain the visa waiver to come and stay in the Schengen states for 90 days. But when the system is imposed in 2022, all the US citizens and others from the 62 eligible countries must have to get authorization from the new system, named ETIAS.

When the US citizen has obtained the visa waiver, it will be valid for three years. And the holder will be awarded multiple entries and exit authorization for the holder. During these three years, all the US citizens or other travelers from the 62 countries on the list are allowed to enter the Schengen states.

The authorization will allow them to stay in the Schengen states for 90 days, and the stay must not exceed more than 90 days in the continuous six months period. The three year authorization period allows the US citizens to come and go out of the Schengen state at their discretion with a valid passport and authentic reason.

When an American citizen is looking to stay for some extended time in any of the Schengen states, he or she must apply for a Schengen visa from the Schengen embassy. And for the short stay in the Schengen states, the ETIAS is enough to provide the waiver for 90 days stay for the business persons, tourists s and travelers who want to transit the Schengen states.

There are various options for the US citizens to stay more than 90 days in most European countries. And the Schengen limit of 90 days is not there to stop them from staying more than that. US passport holders can benefit from the bilateral visa waivers and the agreement of the states and countries for the US for the citizens and their stay in the countries. Following is the list of countries with the limit of the stay that those countries permit according to the visa waiver's bilateral agreement.

  • France: limit for the US citizens = 90 days
  • Latvia: limit for the US citizens = 90 days in half a year*
  • Denmark: limit for the US citizens = three months
  • The Netherlands: limit for the US citizens = 90 days*
  • Belgium: limit for the US citizens = 3 months
  • Italy: limit for the US citizens = three months
  • Portugal: limit for the US citizens = 60 days*
  • Spain: limit for the US citizens = 90 days*
  • Hungary: limit for the US citizens = 90 days*
Schengen-associated country:
  • Norway: limit for the US citizens from bilateral agreement = 90 days
*Permits only ordinary passports

When a US citizen has benefited from the bilateral agreement, the waiver will only allow the travel to stay and move in the European state. The holder is not allowed to go in the Schengen area. If the citizen is already in the Schengen state, they must exit the state after availing of the waiver from the bilateral agreement.

If the US citizen is in the European state, the transit will require the holder to fly to the third country or move to a European state other than the Schengen area. And if the traveler wants to transit to the Schengen state, the ETIAS authorization is obligatory to move from the Schengen state's border.

There is a compulsion to stay in the European states for the travelers who have obtained the waiver from the bilateral agreement. And the ETIAS authorization will allow the holder to move any of the Schengen states and the four other European countries. The bilateral agreement between countries can change from time to time for the citizens and their stay.

The travel documents and requirements for US citizens' application are the same as for any of the other citizens from the list of 62 countries. Every citizen must have a valid passport with the debit or credit card. The payment method for the application processing fee is the debit or credit card with a minimal fee. The applicant must provide an email that is current and valid for the communication because it will be used to send the denial with the reason or the congratulation message in case of acceptance and authorization of the screening and background check.

The ten-year-old passport will not be entertained in the application process. The citizens must ensure that the passport has a validity date for over three months from the application's date for the visa waiver. Because the authorization is electronically transferred to the passport, and in case of a new passport, you will have to apply again for the ETIAS authorization.

If the applicant has more than one passport or two nationalities with separate passports, this is not an issue for the ETIAS waiver. The best approach is to apply from the passport, which has more validity period left. You will have to use the same passport throughout your stay and travel in the Schengen area, as this single passport will have the electronically infused ETIAS visa waiver.

The ETIAS waiver approval will be sent to the email that the applicant provides at the application time. The good practice is to provide the current email address and get a printed copy of the authorization approval if there is an issue with the electronic system. As your passport will be linked to the electronic ETIAS authorization, a printed copy will be appreciated at the entry time on the border.

From 2022 all US citizens and minors will have to apply and attain the ETIAS authorization approval to enter the Schengen states.
